Banner's kit features a nicely executed two-piece hull (split at the waterline into a gray upper section and red lower section) complete with anti-torpedo bulges and armor belt plus very close-to-scale portholes. Also included are properly shaped and nicely detailed ship's boats, two mediocre OS2U Kingfishers, and fairly well detailed armament and superstructure. The decks have several sections that must be blended together on the top of the hull (two sections are part of the hull itself) but the fit is excellent with little or no filling being needed. The superstructure assembles in "wedding cake" fashion, much like Revell's classic 1/429 version. Both masts are near duplicates of those in the Revell kit.

Some of the other parts also resemble the Revell kit's parts, but many of them have been improved significantly. Examples include more accurate boat cranes, detailed two-piece 5" 25 cal. gun mounts, nicely rendered fire control directors, two-piece searchlights, and an improved grille on the funnel cap. While in no way can the Banner kit be considered truly state-of-the-art, it is nevertheless very buildable, and with a little extra effort and the new GMM detail set, an excellent replica of the Arizona can now be built in this popular scale. It will be much easier to build than a resin kit (no air bubbles, warps, mismatched parts, or other annoying molding flaws to contend with), as well as much cheaper at about $38 retail vs. over $200 for a comparable resin kit. This much is true: Banner's new kit is the best and most accurate plastic kit of the Arizona now available.

The dedicated GMM set in .005" brass has now entered full production and the first batch has arrived. Shipping is now underway. Like our earlier and very successful PE set for the 1/429 scale Revell kit, this larger and more detailed version will allow the modeler to build the new kit as a 1930's Arizona, a 1941 version. The new set features custom-fitted rails, cranes, and catapults that will fit the new kit's plastic parts perfectly. 3-D relief etching is also being used for extra detail. The inclined ladders have more detail than previous GMM inclined ladders, and there are other subtle improvements to be found in this new item.

GMM's new Arizona set is numbered 350-25 and retails for $40.00 plus postage.
