Meeting a critical need for aircraft carriers that could be built quickly and economically, Henry Kaiser created a small escort carrier
based on a merchant hull. Launched in November, 1943, the GAMBIER BAY saw action at Saipan and Tinian.
As part of the famous Taffy III Battle Group, she was crucial in halting the advance of the Japanese Imperial Fleet.
This kit is one of the most excitingly detailed WWII ships we've ever built. Included in the kit are three each of the
two types of aircraft (TBM- 1-C Avengers and FM-2 Wildcats) carried by the GAMBIER BAY, finely cast in resin,
with brass props and landing gear,and insignia decals.

 USS Rendova CVE-114

Hi Captain,

    I have finished your kit of the Gambier Bay.  You may not recognize it as such because I built it as the
USS Rendova CVE 114. 
  There were major changes to the sponsons and the island.  I was able to get a good detailed picture of the island,
then I scratched it out to scale the best I could. The signal flags were copied from the internet, then downsized
on a copy machine to scale size.  All my planes, with the exception of the TBM were scratched built.  I found a blueprint for a Corsair so I downsized it and built the planes from that print.  It only took 300 hours,
but it brought back a lot of memories of the time I spent on the USS Rendova.  This picture of the model with
the planes (I built in 1948) and an original picture of the USS Rendova are now in their own lighted case.
