"Basics of Ship Building" by Mike Ashey
The bible today for the Model Shipbuilder. This book will give step by
step pictures on building plastic kits, resin kits plus photoetching. This is
the best book for the beginner to experienced builder on the newer
special high price kits resin kits and customizing parts.

1. Building Plastic Kits 2. Building Resin Kits
3. Scratchbuilding & Detailing Superstructure Shapes
4. Working with Brass & Stainless Steel Photoetching
5. Painting, Masking, & Decal Application
There is also an 18-page section of color photographs
of finished models by Mike and others. Of the hundreds
of black and white how - to photos. I recognized very
few from his first book. Most highly recommended.

This is a comment from one our our customers on these kits.

First of all The Ticonderoga is a big kit.  The 1/144 scale means that the hull is 3 1/2 feet long.  The kit was shipped from China and was well packed - everything arrived safely. The entire box was wrapped in bubble paper with additional cushioning inside the box, especially for the somewhat fragile hull.  The one piece fiberglass hull is beautiful - sleek and lovely, just requiring light sanding and painting.

The many resin accessories and parts are crisply molded with little or no flash that will require fitting. The resin parts are presented in multiple small, clear, well labeled packages.  Lots of etched brass - seems to be the railings, antennas and radar arrays (which are quite elaborate) and many other small parts I haven't yet identified.  I'm going to add a 1/144 Sea King helicopter as no helicopter is included.  The superstructure is assembled from plastic parts on trees. I'm not sure of the type of plastic, styrene or perhaps vacuum formed.  Assembly of the superstructure looks a little tricky. The superstructure is designed to be removable for RC versions.

The kit can be built as RC or static display.  I have no RC experience (yet) and intend to build the kit as a large scale display model.  The kit does not contain any RC gear - only the gear box molded inside the hull and the propeller shafts through the hull.  If you intend to do RC you will need to purchase all of the other RC gear.  Nice brass propellers are included.

The kit is not for inexperienced modelers and the instructions are somewhat sparse including one page of full size plans with a booklet of assembly diagrams including multiple pages of numbered parts and subassembly diagrams. The diagrams are complete and parts seem to be well labeled, but there are no written instructions.  There are three sheets of press-on decals, but no painting instructions, diagrams, or painting scheme.  You are on you own! The instructions are the weakest part of the kit.

Overall, I am very pleased to have purchased the kit and consider it a good value, if expensive. I believe it will produce a very large, impressive, crisp and clean model with a nice level of detail.     D. Ackley
